How to avoid chaos when heading off on a ski holiday?

We all know the feeling: an amazing ski trip ahead, but stress already creeping in at the thought of a chaotic packing frenzy. So, in addition to Lyly, we wanted to find more ways to help skiers—and ended up gathering our best tips on how to avoid the classic “skis crossed” situation before you even arrive at your destination! At the end of the article, we’ve also put together a ski holiday packing checklist.

Top tips for packing for a ski holiday

1. Give yourself time to prepare

  • Packing in a rush is a guaranteed way to raise stress levels and increase the chaos factor of departure. Instead, ease into the holiday mood well in advance and savor the anticipation while packing—maybe with an après-ski playlist, a cup of hot chocolate, and a bit of visualization!

  • A packing list made ahead of time can be your most important tool for keeping chaos under control. Our team has put together a starter list for you—you’ll find it at the end of the article. Copy it and tailor it to fit your own adventure!

  • Service and purchase any necessary gear in advance, or at the very least check whether the services and shops you might need are available at your destination.

  • Plan your travel snacks, and remember: packing is part of the journey. Good snacks have saved more than one holiday—hanger is every packer’s ultimate final boss.

2. Sort your gear with logic

  • Use different packing bags; for example, vacuum bags can compress bulky winter gear into surprisingly compact packages.

  • Bundle skis and poles into sets using Lyly-Straps, so the right equipment is easy to find and you don’t have to wrestle with skis and poles.

  • Choose items and clothing that are as versatile as possible and avoid going overboard—people often pack far too much “just in case.” One exception: reusable tote bags that pack small and can double as shopping bags or laundry bags.

  • Always leave a bit of free capacity. When bags—and vehicles—aren’t stuffed to the brim, everything is easier to handle, and you’ll have room for things like groceries and souvenirs.

3. Take safety into account when packing

  • Packing properly also protects your belongings from damage, for example in the cargo hold of a bus or airplane.

  • When traveling by car, make sure all luggage is safely placed and secured, both inside the vehicle and in the ski box. Also remember to check that your car’s safety equipment is in order—things like a first aid kit may come in handy in case of a skiing accident.

4. Does your packing style serve you at the destination?

  • Consider what you’ll need immediately upon arrival. Pack essentials on top or separately—so you can access them right away without a major search operation.

  • On holiday, luggage often doubles as storage furniture, so a clear system also makes everyday life during the trip easier.

  • During a ski holiday, skis are unpacked and packed multiple times around ski sessions. Lylys are always with you, helping keep transport and storage organized at the destination too.

5. Schedule time for post-trip laundry

  • Once the holiday is wrapped up, it’s important to relive the memories and dream about what’s next. The perfect moment for this is during the time you’ve set aside for unpacking. Dream, service your gear, do the laundry, and put everything back in its place.
